The Metal Monocle is run and owned by the husband and wife team, Tommy and Caroline Coombes and is the first bar owned by their independent family company called “Crank & Ratchet Bars Ltd”. This company was formed in the summer of 2019. Both the name of the bar and the company name was chosen by a competition that was ran on Facebook when the FB page was first formed before the bar even opened with the winners given free drinks on the opening night.

About us…

The bar itself has a very unique look inside with its unique artwork and is considered to be a Steampunk-themed bar rock/meal/alternative bar in regards to the music and live music. Downstairs has a nautical ’10,000 leagues below the sea’ kind of feel with a giant 20-ft octopus wearing a bowler hat and a monocle on the back of the bar by the local artist Giles Meakin and an equally large steampunk shark on the opposite wall beside the stage with many other pieces of artwork spread throughout by the local artist RetroVandal. The bar even sells its own merchandise with designs by the very talented Tattoos By Thrax and a few other talented artists.

The bar was open a mere 5 months when the Covid pandemic and all the lockdowns came into force. But unlike many venues and businesses in the trade, the pandemic was actually of benefit to the bar once the government grants came into place and with the help from the Arts Council and the Music Venue Alliance (MVA) to support it, to get known with frequent updates and statuses. Once all the lockdowns were lifted, there were only 6 bars open in the city for almost a month and half giving the venue the perfect opportunity to get noticed as it was the only bar open within 30 miles after 11 p.m which gave it a chance to show the city/area what it has to offer

Tommy himself runs the day-to-day running of the company and venue with Caroline being the marketing and media manager and is in charge of booking all the live bands and events she also takes on the role of head of the door staff. Both are often seen in the venue and frequently greet and speak to the bar’s many friendly guests. The bar prides itself on its friendly and approachable staff who always make time for the many wonderful guests who are all made to feel welcome.
